Smoothies

I love making smoothies.  They are a great way to start my day or as a quick pick me up in the afternoon.   There are literally infinite possibilities as far as taste and ingredients go, right? For some people, maybe not.

As a from scratch cook, I have always wondered why you would need a recipe for, let’s say, a strawberry and banana smoothie.  It will have strawberries, bananas, and something liquid.  Seems pretty straightforward to me.  What’s in the fridge?  Orange juice?  Milk?  Apple juice?  Toss it in.  No juice?  No problem.  Use some yogurt and water.  Mix in some mint or applesauce or cinnamon and voila!  Smoothie!!

Well, it turns out that there are a lot of people whose minds work in very different ways than mine. Take one of my best friends, Tonya, for example.  Tonya is a successful entrepreneur, life and business coach, accomplished artist and teacher.   She is a person who can and does accomplish anything she sets her mind to.  But, she cannot cook without a recipe.  She doesn’t know what a ‘pinch’ of something is.  She needs to know the exact measurement of a ‘pinch’.  Me?  I rarely measure anything unless I am baking.

I think that the difference between being someone who can cook from scratch and a person who can’t cook without a recipe lies in how we each view life.  As we all know, there really isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way to live your individual life.  There is just life. I am a “mostly good” kind of person, meaning that things in my life tend not to be too precise, perfect, or “measurable”.  I don’t lose sleep over the little details or worry too much if things aren’t exactly perfect. I’m happiest if things are “mostly good”.   I don’t always make my bed, because I am just going to unmake in again at night.  (OK, I confess, I hardly ever make my bed!  But I’m ok with that.)

For other people, their surrounding have to be just so or they go a little bit nuts.  They are the people who are constantly straightening things, tidying things, cleaning, and organizing life.  I love these people.  I am just not one of them.

So for you wonderful, fantastic, and organized people out there, here is a recipe for a strawberry and banana smoothie, complete with measurements!

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Version 1.0

1 ripe banana broken into quarters

1 C Fresh, ripe strawberries, cleaned and cored

1 ¼ C milk

1/8 tsp  Ground cinnamon
